What is Contrast-enhanced CT?

Contrast-enhanced CT is a radiological examination aiming to investigate vessels, tumors and soft-tissue details in detail with the help of slice images obtained after intravenous administration of iodinated contrast.

It is frequently used in evaluating pulmonary embolism, acute abdomen, tumor staging, planning of pelvic surgery and vascular abnormalities. Image quality is optimized in both time and volume.

Risks such as allergic reaction to the contrast agent and impairment of renal function exist; creatinine measurement and necessary premedication should be planned before the examination.

Symptoms

Acute abdominal pain requiring differential diagnosis
Suspected pulmonary embolism
Tumor staging
Suspected vascular abnormality
Inflammatory bowel disease
Investigation of abscess and source of sepsis
Pre-surgical planning

Risk Factors

Chronic renal failure
History of contrast allergy
Thyroid dysfunction (hyperthyroidism)
Diabetes mellitus and metformin use
Asthma and atopic constitution
Elderly and dehydrated patient

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Always inform the physician about previous allergic reactions
  • Creatinine and eGFR check is required for those with kidney disease
  • A safe interval between iodine-containing drugs and contrast should be planned with the physician
  • Apply urgently for rash, shortness of breath and serious symptoms after the procedure

Treatment Methods

01
Pre-exam creatinine and eGFR evaluation
02
Premedication based on allergy history (antihistamines, steroids)
03
Ensuring good hydration
04
Application and monitoring of the contrast agent
05
Emergency response protocol in case of reaction
06
Evaluation of temporary discontinuation of metformin
