What is Complete Denture (Total Denture)?

Complete denture (total denture) is a removable prosthetic restoration applied to the completely edentulous upper and/or lower jaw, retained by mucosa and alveolar bone support. Acrylic or porcelain teeth are placed on an acrylic resin base.

In maxillary complete dentures, the wide palatal coverage increases retention; in mandibular complete dentures, retention is generally lower due to tongue and cheek movements. Implant-supported overdentures solve this problem.

Correct impression, occlusion recording, tooth selection, and physiologic placement are critical steps for a successful complete denture.

Symptoms

Completely edentulous jaw
Difficulty chewing
Speech disorder
Aesthetic concern
Sunken appearance of the face
Nutritional deficiency

Risk Factors

Severe alveolar bone resorption (denture instability)
Xerostomia (dry mouth, retention decreases)
TMJ disorders
Muscle coordination problems
Neuromuscular diseases

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • In complete edentulism
  • If existing denture has become ill-fitting
  • If there are sores or pain under the denture
  • For annual check-up
