What is Complementary Medicine in Palliative Care?

Complementary medicine in palliative care is the use of methods such as massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy, meditation, music therapy and breathing exercises together with the multidisciplinary team to manage symptoms and improve quality of life in individuals with advanced disease.

Supportive effects have been reported in end-of-life care for symptoms such as pain, dyspnea, anxiety, sleep disturbance and spiritual distress. The level of evidence varies and practices should be individualized to the patient's values and preferences.

Practices do not replace standard palliative medications. They should be applied safely by a competent team, with attention to interactions and contraindications.
