What is Color Therapy (Chromotherapy)?

Color therapy (chromotherapy) is an approach using ambient lighting and visual materials based on the assumption that colors of different wavelengths have physiological and psychological effects.

There is no strong evidence in the scientific literature for the therapeutic effect of chromotherapy. Blue/white light therapy in seasonal depression is a separate evidence-based practice; it should not be confused with general chromotherapy.

Claims that color therapy replaces proven medical treatment are misleading. It can be used at a complementary level to provide individual comfort.

Symptoms

General desire for relaxation
Improvement of work environment
Aesthetics and mood support
Adjuvant support for seasonal depression (should not be confused with evidence-based light therapy)
Coping with stress
Designing a meditation environment

Risk Factors

Relying only on chromotherapy in serious psychiatric illness
Exposure to misleading treatment claims
Use of flashing lights in epileptic patients
Patients with light-sensitive eyes
Trap of expensive and unproven products
Delaying medical treatment

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Psychiatric evaluation should first be done in depression and anxiety
  • Proven light therapy should be preferred over chromotherapy claims
  • Avoid use of flashing lights in epilepsy
  • Be cautious of expensive and unproven devices

Treatment Methods
