What is Cognitive Rehabilitation After Stroke?

Post-stroke cognitive impairment affects attention, memory, executive function, language (aphasia), perception (neglect, agnosia), and apraxia. Severity depends on lesion location, with frontal and subcortical strokes producing prominent executive dysfunction.

Standardized assessment includes Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Mini-Mental State Examination, comprehensive neuropsychological battery, and ecological assessments such as Multiple Errands Test for executive function in everyday tasks.

Cognitive rehabilitation uses restorative approaches (drill and practice, computer-based attention and memory training such as APT-3 and BrainHQ) and compensatory strategies (external memory aids, smartphone reminders, calendar use). Errorless learning, mental practice, and family training improve carryover.
