What is Clinical Cryotherapy (Cold Therapy)?

Cryotherapy aims to produce therapeutic effects by temporarily lowering tissue temperature using methods such as ice packs, cold sprays, cryocompression, contrast baths and whole-body cryotherapy chambers.

It is used as adjuvant therapy in acute musculoskeletal injuries (RICE protocol), postoperative edema and pain control, flares of rheumatologic diseases, and sports injuries. The evidence level is limited for whole-body cryotherapy.

It must be used cautiously in patients with Raynaud phenomenon, cryoglobulinemia, cold urticaria, peripheral vascular disease and sensory deficits. Duration and temperature should be regulated to prevent burn and frostbite risk.
