What is Clinical Aromatherapy?

Clinical aromatherapy aims to contribute to symptom management through inhalation, topical application, or ambient diffusion of essential oils derived from plants.

Oils such as lavender (anxiety, sleep), peppermint (nausea), and ginger (nausea in pregnancy) have clinical support. The level of evidence varies, and dose and route of application are important.

Each essential oil should be evaluated like a medication; allergies, photosensitivity, and contraindications in children and pregnant women should not be overlooked. Guidance from a qualified aromatherapist is preferred.
