What is Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury?

Chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI) refers to the long-term sequelae following moderate-to-severe brain trauma, including persistent cognitive deficits, behavioral and personality changes, motor impairment, post-traumatic epilepsy, and psychiatric disorders. Symptoms may persist months to lifelong.

Common chronic features include impaired attention, memory, executive function, slowed processing, mood disorders (depression, irritability), sleep disturbance, headache, and physical disability. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a distinct neurodegenerative disease linked to repetitive head impacts.

Comprehensive rehabilitation involving physical, occupational, speech, and cognitive therapy, alongside neuropsychiatric and pharmacologic management of symptoms (antiepileptics, antidepressants), is essential. Long-term follow-up addresses functional, social, and vocational reintegration.
