What is Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation (Traditional Approach)?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession focused on the diagnosis and management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders, particularly through manual therapy of the spine and extremities. Spinal manipulation, the signature technique, applies high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) thrusts to specific vertebral segments to restore joint motion and reduce pain.

Proposed mechanisms include cavitation of the joint with release of intra-articular gases, restoration of segmental motion, modulation of muscle spindle and Golgi tendon organ activity, gate-control analgesia, increase in pain-pressure thresholds and reflex inhibition of pain pathways. Some neurophysiological studies show modulation of central pain processing.

Chiropractic care is most evidence-supported for acute and chronic mechanical low back pain, neck pain and cervicogenic headache. It is integrated with rehabilitation exercises, soft-tissue therapy, ergonomic counseling and lifestyle advice. Cervical manipulation requires careful screening for vertebrobasilar insufficiency due to rare risk of arterial dissection. In Türkiye chiropractic falls under GETAT regulation requiring physician certification.

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • New neurological symptoms (numbness, weakness)
  • Bowel or bladder dysfunction
  • Severe headache after manipulation
  • Visual disturbances or speech difficulty
  • Suspected vertebral artery dissection
  • Worsening of pain after sessions
  • History of unexplained fall
  • Red flag symptoms (fever, weight loss)
