What is Cardiac MRI (Detailed)?

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is a non-invasive method that performs structural, functional and tissue characterization of the heart with high resolution.

It is the gold standard in evaluation of myocardial viability, infarct area, myocarditis, cardiomyopathies, congenital heart diseases, pericardial diseases and ventricular function.

Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) with gadolinium contrast material shows myocardial fibrosis. It is preferred due to absence of radiation and superior soft tissue contrast.

Symptoms

Dilated or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Suspicion of myocarditis
Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia
Non-ischemic cardiomyopathies
Congenital heart diseases
Cardiac tumors and masses

Risk Factors

MR-incompatible implants
Severe claustrophobia
Gadolinium allergy
Renal failure (gadolinium restriction)
Cooperation difficulty due to long procedure time
Uncontrolled arrhythmia

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Metal implants and pacemaker must be reported
  • Procedure time may be 45-60 minutes, requires cooperation
  • Following breath-hold commands is important
  • Renal function should be evaluated before gadolinium

Treatment Methods

01
MR safety form and clinical evaluation
02
Synchronous acquisition with EKG triggering
03
Non-contrast sequences (cine, T1, T2)
04
Gadolinium injection and late acquisition (LGE)
05
Ventricular function measurements
06
Joint report by cardiologist and radiologist
