What is Cardiac MRI?

Cardiac MRI is an advanced imaging method in which the heart is evaluated both structurally and functionally. Using ECG- and respiration-triggered sequences, myocardial function, scar tissue and perfusion are studied.

It is preferred in hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, cardiac tumors, congenital cardiac anomalies and post-infarct viability assessment. It does not contain radiation.

The examination takes 45–60 minutes. Pacemakers, certain metal clips and severe renal failure are contraindications.

Symptoms

Unexplained heart failure
Unexplained palpitations
Suspected myocarditis
Diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Congenital heart diseases
Myocardial viability assessment
Suspected cardiac tumor

Risk Factors

Metal implants and pacemakers
Claustrophobia
Gadolinium allergy
Severe renal failure
Patients with arrhythmias (gating difficulty)
Childhood (need for sedation)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If diagnostic uncertainty exists, the cardiologist may request cardiac MRI
  • Metal implants and pacemakers must always be reported
  • Renal function should be evaluated before gadolinium
  • Examination conditions should be planned in arrhythmic patients

Treatment Methods

01
Optimization of ECG-triggered sequences
02
Use of gadolinium contrast when needed
03
Respiratory triggering techniques
04
Collaboration with cardiology
05
Interpretation of results in clinical context
06
Planning of follow-up MRI or alternative methods
