What is Walking Training with Cane and Crutches?

Assistive walking devices include canes single point or four point crutches axillary or forearm and walkers. Device selection considers patient weight bearing status balance impairment and upper extremity strength. Proper training prevents falls reduces compensatory patterns and promotes independent ambulation.

Cane technique involves holding the cane in the hand opposite to the affected leg with handle at greater trochanter level. The cane advances with the affected leg while the unaffected leg remains stable. Crutch gaits include three point gait for non weight bearing four point gait for weight bearing as tolerated and swing through gait for advanced users. Each pattern requires specific instruction and practice.

Training includes proper height adjustment grip technique gait pattern selection stair negotiation and obstacle navigation. Patients learn to ascend stairs leading with the unaffected leg and descend leading with the assistive device and affected leg. Endurance and confidence build with progressive training. Discharge readiness requires demonstrated safe independent ambulation including transfers and community level distances. Regular reassessment ensures continued device appropriateness as recovery progresses.

Symptoms

Indication not symptom based
Lower extremity injury or surgery
Balance impairment with fall risk
Pain limiting weight bearing
Neurologic gait dysfunction

Risk Factors

Inadequate upper extremity strength
Cognitive impairment limiting learning
Bilateral lower extremity weakness
Severe cardiopulmonary deconditioning
Skin integrity issues at contact points

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When weight bearing restrictions are unclear
  • When falls occur with current device
  • When pain develops at contact points
  • When functional progression stalls

Treatment Methods

01
Device selection by clinical assessment
02
Height adjustment to anatomic landmarks
03
Gait pattern selection by weight bearing status
04
Progressive training with supervision
05
Stair and obstacle negotiation training
06
Independent ambulation evaluation prior to discharge
