What is Burn Scar Management and Rehabilitation?

Burn rehabilitation is divided into three phases: acute, subacute and reconstructive. In the acute phase, antideformity positioning (burn position), passive and active exercises and edema control are the priority goals. Preventive interventions before contracture develops are critical.

In the subacute phase (after wound closure), the goal is to prevent hypertrophic scarring with pressure garments (24 h/day for 12–18 months), silicone gel sheets, compression, laser therapy (pulsed dye, fractional CO2), intralesional steroids and massage.

In the reconstructive phase, surgical scar revision, Z-plasty, contracture release, free flap transfer and full-thickness skin grafting are performed. Rehabilitation continues at every stage. Psychosocial support (especially in facial burns) is indispensable.
