What is Broca Aphasia?

Broca aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage in the anterior part of the left cerebral hemisphere (Broca area). Patients know what they want to say and largely preserve comprehension, but have difficulty combining words into fluent sentences.

Speech is usually slow, effortful, and telegraphic. Patients try to communicate using short, key words; conjunctions and auxiliary verbs are typically dropped. Writing may be impaired in a similar way.

The most common cause is stroke. Brain tumors, trauma, infections, and degenerative diseases can also cause Broca aphasia. Significant improvement can be achieved with speech therapy initiated early.
