What is Breathing Therapy (Pranayama)?

Breathing therapy is a group of practices including diaphragmatic breathing, rhythmic breathing, pranayama techniques, and approaches such as Buteyko. It aims to reduce the stress response by balancing the autonomic nervous system.

It is recommended as supportive in asthma, COPD, and panic disorder. Positive effects have also been reported in intense psychological stress and sleep disorders.

Breathing techniques are safe, but improper practice may cause hyperventilation and fainting. Those with serious cardiopulmonary disease should start under physician guidance.
