What is Breast MRI Screening?

Breast MRI is an examination that provides dynamic and high-resolution imaging of the breast in a high magnetic field, using IV contrast. It is more sensitive than mammography in detecting cancer but has lower specificity.

International guidelines recommend annual MR screening in high-risk individuals, such as those with strong family history, BRCA mutation or a history of chest radiotherapy. It is also used in surgical planning, evaluation of response to neoadjuvant therapy and assessment of implant rupture.

The procedure takes about 30–45 minutes and the patient lies prone. Careful evaluation is needed in cases of contrast allergy and advanced kidney failure.

Symptoms

Screening of women at high risk
Evaluation of suspicious findings on mammography
Extent-of-disease assessment in newly diagnosed breast cancer
Monitoring response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy
Suspected breast implant rupture
Postoperative follow-up

Risk Factors

Incompatible metallic implants in the body
Severe claustrophobia
Advanced kidney failure (gadolinium)
Pregnancy (unless absolutely necessary)
History of allergy
Inability to be properly positioned

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Consult a physician for high-risk evaluation
  • A center with sufficient experience for breast MRI should be chosen
  • Renal function should be evaluated before contrast
  • In cyclical assessment, the menstrual phase should be considered

Treatment Methods

01
Scheduling on days 7–14 of the menstrual cycle
02
Dynamic acquisition with IV contrast
03
High-resolution reconstructions
04
Reporting with BI-RADS classification
05
MR-guided biopsy if necessary
06
Evaluation with the multidisciplinary oncology team
