What is Brain Hemorrhage?

Brain hemorrhage occurs when blood leaks into the brain tissue or between the brain membranes as a result of rupture of one of the blood vessels inside the skull. There are two main types: intracerebral hemorrhage (into the brain tissue) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (between the brain membranes).

Hypertension is the most important cause of brain hemorrhage. Arteriovenous malformation (AVM), aneurysm rupture, anticoagulant use, and head trauma are among other important causes. Subarachnoid hemorrhage is usually caused by aneurysm rupture and is described as 'the worst headache of life'.

Brain hemorrhage is a medical emergency. Rapid diagnosis and intervention minimize permanent damage. Treatment may include intensive care monitoring or surgical intervention depending on the type, location, and size of the bleeding.
