What is Biofeedback Therapy?

Biofeedback is based on the measurement of physiological parameters such as muscle tension, pulse, skin temperature, respiration, and brain waves with sensors, displaying them in real time to the patient, and teaching conscious control over these signals.

It is used in tension-type headache, migraine, chronic low back pain, urinary incontinence, irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, and pediatric pain syndromes. Randomized trials have reported limited to moderate efficacy.

It must be performed by a trained practitioner using appropriate devices. Patient motivation and home practice are decisive in success.
