What is Becker Muscular Dystrophy?

Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is a type of muscular dystrophy caused by mutations in the same gene (DMD gene) as Duchenne but is generally milder and begins later. Patients can produce partially functional dystrophin protein.

Symptoms usually begin in adolescence or adulthood. Proximal muscle weakness, calf hypertrophy, exercise-related muscle cramps, and fatigue are seen. Cardiac involvement (dilated cardiomyopathy) can be a significant problem at an early age.

Diagnosis is made by elevated creatine kinase, EMG, and genetic testing. Cardiology follow-up is of vital importance.

Symptoms

Weakness in the legs and easy fatigue
Enlargement of the calves
Difficulty climbing stairs and lifting heavy objects
Muscle cramps after exercise
Signs of heart failure
Progressive but slow course
Walking difficulty in the late stage

Risk Factors

Male sex
Family history of BMD/DMD
Carrier mothers
Mutation in the DMD gene
Family history of early-age heart failure
Positive carrier testing in relatives
Previously diagnosed male relative

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • New-onset proximal weakness in adolescents/adults
  • Unexplained elevated creatine kinase
  • If there is a family history of BMD or DMD
  • If signs of heart failure are present
  • Severe exercise-related muscle pain and dark urine

Treatment Methods

01
Drug therapy for heart failure
02
Regular cardiology follow-up (ECG, echocardiography)
03
Physical therapy and protective exercise
04
Corticosteroids (in selected cases)
05
Respiratory monitoring
06
Genetic counseling and family planning
