What is Ayurveda: Traditional Indian Medicine?

Ayurveda translates to 'science of life' and is one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems, originating in the Indian subcontinent over 3,000 years ago.

Core concept is the three doshas — Vata (air/space), Pitta (fire/water), Kapha (earth/water) — which determine individual constitution (prakriti) and disease tendencies.

Treatment modalities include personalized diet, herbal medicines (Ashwagandha, Turmeric, Triphala), oil therapies (Abhyanga), detoxification (Panchakarma), yoga, and meditation.

Within GETAT, ayurveda is offered by certified practitioners as complementary therapy for stress, digestive disorders, chronic pain, skin conditions, and lifestyle-related diseases.

Symptoms

Chronic stress, fatigue, sleep disturbances
Digestive disorders (IBS, dyspepsia, constipation)
Chronic skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis as adjunct)
Musculoskeletal pain (chronic back pain, arthritis)
Lifestyle-related conditions (metabolic syndrome, obesity, hypertension)

Risk Factors

Pregnancy and breastfeeding — many herbs and panchakarma contraindicated
Heavy metal toxicity risk from traditional preparations (rasa shastra) — use only certified, tested products
Drug-herb interactions (especially with anticoagulants, antidiabetics, immunosuppressants)
Severe acute illness, organ failure, or pediatric use without specialist supervision
Allergic reactions to specific herbs (sesame oil, ghee, specific botanicals)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Apply for evaluation by a GETAT-certified ayurvedic physician before starting any ayurvedic treatment
  • Re-evaluate any chronic disease management with both ayurvedic and conventional physicians for coordination
  • Seek immediate review for any acute symptom worsening, drug interaction signs, or allergic reactions
  • Schedule pre-conception or pre-surgical consultation as some preparations need to be stopped

Treatment Methods

01
Constitutional assessment to determine dosha balance and individualized recommendations
02
Dietary modifications based on dosha (warm cooked foods for Vata, cooling for Pitta, light/dry for Kapha)
03
Herbal medicines from certified suppliers with quality assurance (heavy metal testing)
04
Panchakarma detoxification protocols only at certified centers under medical supervision
05
Lifestyle interventions: yoga, pranayama, meditation, oil massage; integration with conventional treatment for chronic conditions; never stop conventional medications without medical guidance
