What is Ayurveda Panchakarma Detoxification?

Panchakarma is a traditional Ayurvedic therapeutic regimen consisting of five main cleansing actions: Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal administration) and Raktamokshana (bloodletting), preceded by preparatory oleation (snehana) and sweating (svedana).

Within Ayurveda the goal is to eliminate accumulated metabolic waste (ama) and rebalance the doshas (vata, pitta, kapha); panchakarma is performed only after individualised assessment by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Modern biomedical science does not recognise the dosha framework or a generic body-wide detoxification process; the kidneys, liver, lungs, gut and skin already perform clearance, and there is no high-quality evidence that panchakarma improves laboratory markers of detoxification.

Reported benefits in some small studies include subjective improvements in stress, sleep and certain functional symptoms, but the literature is heterogeneous and many studies have methodological limitations; serious adverse events have been reported including dehydration, electrolyte disturbance and herb-induced liver injury.

In Turkey, similar traditional purification practices are not formally listed within GETAT, but Ayurveda services exist privately. Patients should choose only certified providers, share their full medication list (especially anticoagulants, immunosuppressants and oncology drugs) and never replace conventional medical treatment of serious diseases.
