What is Ayurveda — Dosha General Principles?

Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medical philosophy combining 5 elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether) and 3 doshas (vata, pitta, kapha).

Each individual has a constitutional type (prakruti); when doshas are out of balance disease (vikruti) develops.

Treatment includes diet, herbal preparations, panchakarma (purification), yoga and meditation.

Symptoms

Vata imbalance: dry skin, joint pain, anxiety, constipation
Pitta imbalance: skin rash, heartburn, anger
Kapha imbalance: lethargy, weight gain, sinusitis
Most common indications: chronic stress
Functional gastrointestinal disturbance
Inflammatory joint disease
Chronic skin disease and allergy

Risk Factors

Some Ayurvedic preparations may contain heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic)
Drug-herb interaction is common (warfarin, immunosuppressant)
Caution is required during pregnancy and lactation
Dosing standardisation may be insufficient
Diabetic and renal patient risk is high
Caution is required for guggul, ashwagandha, turmeric high doses
Quality control of unregulated products is variable

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Information must be given to the physician about Ayurvedic supplement use
  • It must not be substituted for severe disease (cancer, organ failure)
  • Ayurvedic medication should be discontinued before surgery
  • Hepatotoxicity assessment is required for liver function disturbance
