What is Autogenic Exercise (Schultz Method)?

Autogenic training is a structured relaxation technique developed by the German psychiatrist Johannes Heinrich Schultz in the 1930s, aiming to provide autonomic nervous system balance through six standard exercises.

The six basic exercises consist sequentially of: heaviness sensation (muscle relaxation), warmth sensation (peripheral vasodilation), heart regularity, breathing regularity, abdominal warmth and forehead coolness suggestions.

Meta-analyses have shown that autogenic training is effective in anxiety, insomnia, tension-type headache, hypertension and Raynaud's phenomenon. It is widely used in clinical psychology and psychosomatic medicine in Europe.
