What is Art Therapy: Behavioral Support in Elderly Dementia?

Art therapy is a creative therapy discipline that aims to provide emotional, behavioral and cognitive well-being by using the therapeutic potential of the art-making process (painting, sculpture, collage, clay). It is delivered by certified art therapists.

In dementia patients, art therapy shows positive effects on agitation, anxiety, depression, apathy and sleep disturbance. It provides a non-verbal channel of expression; communication and interaction improve. The sense of self and identity is supported.

International dementia care guidelines recommend non-pharmacological approaches as first-line for behavioral and psychological symptoms. Art therapy, music therapy, reminiscence therapy and Montessori-based activities fall within this scope.
