What is Aromatherapy: Essential Oil Therapy?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils — concentrated aromatic plant extracts — for therapeutic effects on physical and emotional wellbeing.

Essential oils contain volatile bioactive compounds (terpenes, esters, phenols) that may modulate olfactory pathways, limbic system response, and skin absorption.

Common applications include lavender for anxiety/sleep, peppermint for nausea/headache, tea tree for antimicrobial effect, and citrus oils for mood elevation.

Within Türkiye's GETAT framework, aromatherapy is recognized as a complementary modality applied by certified physicians; it is not a substitute for conventional treatment of serious disease.

Symptoms

Anxiety, generalized worry, mild depression
Insomnia, difficulty initiating sleep, night-time awakenings
Postoperative or chemotherapy-induced nausea
Tension headaches, mild musculoskeletal discomfort
Skin conditions (eczema, fungal infections) under physician supervision

Risk Factors

Asthma — some oils (eucalyptus, peppermint) can trigger bronchospasm
Pregnancy and breastfeeding — many oils contraindicated; consult specialist
Children under 6 years — limited oil selection and concentration
Skin allergies, atopic dermatitis — patch testing required
Pets in the household — many oils toxic to cats, dogs

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Apply for evaluation by a GETAT-certified physician before starting aromatherapy for chronic symptoms
  • Re-evaluate if symptoms worsen, new respiratory or skin reactions occur
  • Seek prompt review for any seizures, syncope, or severe allergic reaction following aromatherapy use
  • Schedule a consultation if you are pregnant, nursing, or considering aromatherapy for a child

Treatment Methods

01
Inhalation: diffusion (3-5 drops in water diffuser, 15-30 minutes), direct inhalation (cotton ball, steam), or aromatherapy patches
02
Topical: dilute essential oils in carrier oil (1-2% for adults, 0.5% for children) for massage or skin application; never apply undiluted
03
Indirect: bath additives (after dispersion in carrier), room sprays, pillow application
04
Quality assurance: use therapeutic-grade, GC-MS tested oils from reputable suppliers; check oil expiry and storage
05
Integration with conventional care: aromatherapy as adjunct, not replacement; coordinate with primary physician about all complementary therapies
