What is Apitherapy: Bee Product Treatment?

Apitherapy is the use of products from honeybees — honey, propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen, beeswax, and bee venom — for therapeutic purposes.

Honey: antimicrobial (especially Manuka), wound healing, soothing for sore throat and cough, prebiotic effects.

Propolis: antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant; used for oral health, skin conditions, immune support.

Royal jelly: nutritional supplement with proteins, fatty acids; bee pollen as food supplement; bee venom therapy (BVT) for inflammatory joint conditions and multiple sclerosis (under medical supervision).

Symptoms

Wound healing — chronic ulcers, burns, surgical wounds (medical-grade honey)
Sore throat, cough, upper respiratory infection symptoms
Oral health — gingivitis, mucositis, mouth ulcers (propolis)
Skin conditions — eczema, herpes labialis, acne (propolis topical)
Inflammatory joint disease, fibromyalgia, MS (bee venom therapy under specialist care)

Risk Factors

Severe bee venom allergy — anaphylaxis risk; bee venom therapy contraindicated
Pollen allergy — bee pollen and royal jelly may trigger reactions
Infants under 12 months — botulism risk from raw honey
Diabetes — honey still contains sugars, monitor glycemic effect
Pregnancy — limited safety data for some products; consult specialist

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Apply for evaluation by a GETAT-certified physician before starting bee venom therapy or for chronic conditions
  • Re-evaluate immediately if there are signs of allergic reaction (swelling, hives, breathing difficulty)
  • Seek immediate care for any anaphylaxis after bee product use — call 112
  • Schedule baseline allergy testing if considering bee venom therapy

Treatment Methods

01
Wound care: medical-grade Manuka honey or sterile honey dressings, changed every 1-3 days based on exudate
02
Topical propolis: tinctures or ointments for oral and skin conditions; 2-3 applications daily
03
Oral honey: 1-2 teaspoons for sore throat or cough (avoid in infants); throat lozenges with propolis
04
Bee venom therapy: only by certified practitioners with allergy testing, emergency epinephrine readily available, gradual sting protocols
05
Nutritional supplementation: royal jelly capsules, bee pollen granules — start small to test tolerance; integration with conventional medical treatment
