What is Aphasia Rehabilitation?

Aphasia is a language disorder that develops after brain injury (most often left hemisphere stroke). Speech, comprehension, reading, and writing skills can be affected to varying degrees. Approximately 20,000-30,000 stroke patients in Turkey each year are at risk of developing aphasia.

Types of aphasia: Broca (nonfluent, comprehension preserved), Wernicke (fluent, comprehension impaired), global (both impaired), conduction (repetition impaired), transcortical motor/sensory, and anomic (word-finding difficulty).

Rehabilitation approaches include classical language therapy, Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), Constraint-Induced Aphasia Therapy (CIAT), script training, PACE (Promoting Aphasic's Communicative Effectiveness), and technology-supported treatments.

Symptoms

Word-finding difficulty (anomia)
Nonfluent, hesitant speech
Grammar impairments (agrammatism)
Comprehension difficulty
Reading and writing impairment
Paraphasias (word substitutions)

Risk Factors

Left hemisphere stroke
Hypertension
Atrial fibrillation
Smoking and diabetes
Head trauma
Primary progressive aphasia (dementia subtype)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Speech disturbance after stroke
  • When language comprehension difficulty develops
  • When communication failures persist
  • Progressive slowing of word retrieval
  • Suspected primary progressive aphasia

Aphasia tests (Boston, WAB, Turkish Aphasia Assessment)
02
Classical language therapy (individual and group)

05
Script training and functional communication
