What is Amyloid PET-CT: Alzheimer Disease Diagnosis?

Amyloid PET-CT is a molecular imaging method that provides in vivo imaging of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain. Amyloid deposition, one of the pathologic hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, is detected by this method.

Three FDA-approved amyloid PET tracers exist: 18F-florbetaben (Neuraceq), 18F-florbetapir (Amyvid), 18F-flutemetamol (Vizamyl). These tracers cross the blood-brain barrier and bind to beta-amyloid plaques.

Indications include atypical cognitive impairment, early-onset dementia, suspected progression, and differential diagnosis (Alzheimer vs. frontotemporal dementia vs. primary progressive aphasia). Positive result supports Alzheimer, negative result largely excludes it.
