What is Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is an educational method developed at the end of the 19th century by Frederick Matthias Alexander, aimed at helping individuals recognize and correct their poor postural and movement habits.

Some published randomized trials have shown that it may be beneficial in chronic low back and neck pain. Overall, however, the evidence is limited and it is not a medical treatment.

In Türkiye it is provided by certified instructors within the GETAT framework. It does not replace conventional physiotherapy and exercise; it should be regarded as a complementary approach.

Symptoms

Chronic mechanical low back pain (supportive)
Neck and shoulder tension (supportive)
Postural disturbances
Performance support for performing artists
Ergonomics for office workers
Stress and tension management

Risk Factors

Acute musculoskeletal injuries
Red flag symptoms (night pain, deficit)
Severe psychiatric problems
Severe cardiovascular disease
Pregnancy (some techniques need adaptation)
Active rheumatologic disease

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If there is acute pain or neurological deficit, see a physician first
  • The Alexander Technique alone is not sufficient for pain treatment
  • Prefer a certified instructor
  • Conventional physical therapy should take priority
