What is Advanced Prosthetic Knee (Microprocessor Controlled)?

Microprocessor-controlled knee prostheses (MPK) work with hydraulic or magneto-rheological (MR) systems. By processing data from gyroscopes, angle sensors, and load sensors, they automatically adjust stance phase resistance (to reduce fall risk) and swing phase speed.

Modern models such as C-Leg (Otto Bock), Genium, X3, and Rheo Knee XC are optimized for different activity levels. They run on batteries (2-3 days). Waterproof models offer swimming and showering options.

Advantages: reduced fall risk (60-80%), energy savings, adaptation to uneven surfaces, comfort going down stairs. Disadvantages are high cost, battery requirement, and mechanical complexity.

Symptoms

Transfemoral amputation
K3-K4 activity level
Active lifestyle expectation
Good residual limb structure
Sufficient hip strength
Demand for walking on uneven terrain

Risk Factors

Low activity level (K1-K2)
Hip abductor insufficiency
Cognitive limitations
Battery management difficulty
Severe vascular insufficiency
Financial limitation

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • After transfemoral amputation
  • When the current prosthesis is not providing benefit
  • When fall risk is high
  • With active lifestyle demand
  • When prosthetic upgrade is being considered

Treatment Methods

01
Activity level assessment
02
Residual limb fit and socket fabrication
03
MPK prosthesis selection
04
Sensor calibration
05
Gait training (level ground → stairs)
06
Battery and maintenance education
07
Fall prevention program
08
Long-term follow-up
