What is Acupuncture for Migraine Prophylaxis?

In migraine prophylaxis, acupuncture has shown a moderate effect on attack frequency and severity in systematic reviews, comparable to standard care and at times to prophylactic medications. It can be considered particularly in patients who cannot tolerate drug side effects.

Treatment is usually planned in 6-12 week sessions and used as a complement, not an alternative, to modern drugs such as beta blockers, topiramate, and CGRP antagonists.

Patient education, realistic expectation management, and a migraine diary are important. Practices promising miraculous cures should be avoided.
