What is Acupuncture in Chronic Low-Back Pain?

In chronic non-specific low-back pain, acupuncture has shown a modest advantage over sham acupuncture in systematic reviews and randomised trials. Beneficial effects on pain, functional disability and analgesic use have been reported.

The mechanism is not fully understood; a combination of endorphin release, local neuromodulation and placebo effect is thought to be involved.

Acupuncture should be combined with conventional exercise therapy, manual therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy. It is not regarded as a stand-alone treatment.
