What is Abdominal Ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasound is a non-radiation examination that visualizes the liver, gallbladder, biliary tract, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and major vessels using sound waves.

It is the first-line method for evaluating gallstones, fatty liver, kidney stones, ascites, and cysts/masses. Blood flow can also be evaluated with Doppler.

The procedure takes an average of 20-30 minutes; 6-8 hours of fasting is recommended before the examination.

Symptoms

Abdominal pain
Suspected gallstones
Elevated liver enzymes
Kidney stones and flank pain
Ascites and abdominal distension
Follow-up of intra-abdominal mass
Trauma evaluation (FAST)

Risk Factors

Fatty liver disease
History of gallstones
Chronic kidney disease
Chronic hepatitis
Obesity (may affect image quality)
Excessive intestinal gas

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Persistent abdominal pain, jaundice, and abdominal distension warrant ultrasound
  • Urgent ultrasound may be performed for flank pain and hematuria
  • Periodic ultrasound is recommended for chronic liver disease patients
  • FAST examination after trauma can be life-saving
