What is Abdominal MRI?

Abdominal MRI is a radiation-free, high soft-tissue resolution method for examining intra-abdominal organs (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, adrenals).

Bile and pancreatic ducts can be visualized with special sequences such as MRCP (magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography). Mass characterization in the liver and quantification of iron and fat content can be performed.

The examination takes 30–45 minutes. Gadolinium contrast can be used depending on adequate kidney function.

Symptoms

Follow-up of chronic liver disease
Bile duct stones and cholestasis
Cystic pancreatic lesions
Evaluation of renal mass
Hepatocellular carcinoma screening
Inflammatory bowel disease
Complications of celiac disease

Risk Factors

Chronic hepatitis B and C
Alcohol consumption and fatty liver
Family history of liver cancer
Gallstones and high cholesterol
History of pancreatitis
Diabetes

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • May be requested for further evaluation in jaundice and abdominal pain
  • For characterization of masses detected in the liver
  • MRCP is preferred in biliary obstruction
  • Planned MRI follow-up is performed during disease monitoring

Treatment Methods

01
Prevention of motion artifacts with respiratory triggering
02
Dynamic phase examination after gadolinium administration
03
MRCP sequences
04
Fibrosis assessment with elastography
05
Measurement of liver fat and iron content
06
Collaboration with gastroenterology
