What is Vaginismus?

Vaginismus is the involuntary contraction of the muscles around the vaginal entrance, causing pain and/or impossible entry during intercourse, gynecologic examination, or tampon use.

Causes are most often psychological; fear, anxiety, trauma, and misinformation are leading factors. However, physical problems must also be ruled out.

Collaboration of obstetrics-gynecology and psychiatry is important for diagnosis and treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy and gradual exposure are highly effective.
