What is Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety is a normal and protective response that arises in the face of danger. However, in anxiety disorder, anxiety intensifies out of proportion to an actual threat, cannot be controlled, and seriously limits daily life. It is the most common mental health disorder worldwide.

Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias and separation anxiety are different types of anxiety disorder. Each is distinguished by specific triggers and unique symptoms.

Anxiety disorder results from overactivity of the brain's alarm system. The majority can be effectively managed with psychotherapy (especially CBT), drug therapy, and lifestyle changes.
