What is Specific Phobias?

Specific phobias are anxiety disorders characterized by intense and persistent fear of specific objects, animals or situations that is out of proportion to actual danger. The most common types include animal phobias (spiders, dogs), blood-injection phobia, height phobia and confined-space phobia.

When the feared stimulus is encountered or anticipated, intense anxiety or panic develops immediately. The person is usually aware that the reaction is excessive but cannot control it.

Specific phobias are the most common anxiety disorders. As avoidance behavior continues, life space narrows; however, treatment provides strong recovery.

Symptoms

Immediate intense fear of the phobic object or situation
Palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath
Active avoidance of the phobic stimulus
Freezing or panic during forced exposure
Anxiety even when only thinking about the phobia
Restriction of daily life

Risk Factors

Adverse experience or trauma in childhood
Family history of phobia or anxiety disorder
Parental reactions reinforcing the phobic stimulus
High emotional sensitivity
Female sex (more common in some subtypes)
