What is Somatoform Disorder (Somatic Symptom Disorder)?

Somatic symptom disorder (somatoform disorder) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by excessive preoccupation with one or more physical symptoms and the development of intense worry and anxiety around these symptoms. The symptoms are real; the person does not fabricate them.

Pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal complaints, and shortness of breath are the most common bodily symptoms. When medical investigations return normal results, communication breakdown can occur between patients and physicians; the patient's complaints should not be ignored.

Somatic symptom disorder is frequently seen alongside depression and anxiety. With psychiatric treatment, both bodily complaints and mental health can significantly improve.
