What is Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder)?

Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) is an intense and persistent fear of being negatively evaluated by others or of behaving in an embarrassing way in social settings. This fear seriously impairs social and occupational functioning.

Unlike shyness, the fear in social anxiety disorder is excessive and out of proportion; the person is aware of it but cannot control it. Social situations such as crowds, public speaking, and eating in front of others are systematically avoided.

Social phobia begins in adolescence and, if untreated, predisposes to isolation, depression, and alcohol use. The vast majority recover with a combination of CBT and pharmacotherapy.

Symptoms

Intense anxiety and fear in social situations
Palpitations, sweating, blushing, voice trembling
Anticipatory anxiety about social situations
Avoidance of or enduring social settings with intense distress
Excessive panic in performance situations (speeches, presentations)
Awareness that the fear is exaggerated but inability to control it

Risk Factors

Family history of social phobia or anxiety
Shy and introverted temperament
Childhood bullying or being humiliated in public
Parental overprotection or high criticism
Crowded work or social environments involving evaluation
