What is Sexual Dysfunction Disorders?

Sexual dysfunction encompasses persistent difficulties with sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain that cause distress. DSM-5 categories include hypoactive sexual desire disorder, female sexual interest/arousal disorder, erectile disorder, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, female orgasmic disorder, and genito-pelvic pain disorder.

Causes are multifactorial: medical (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hormonal disorders, medication side effects from SSRIs and antihypertensives), psychological (anxiety, depression, trauma history, relationship conflict), and lifestyle (stress, fatigue, alcohol).

Comprehensive assessment includes detailed sexual and medical history, physical examination, hormone levels (testosterone, prolactin), and partner involvement when appropriate. Treatment combines pharmacotherapy (PDE5 inhibitors, flibanserin, hormone replacement), sex therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and couple therapy.
