What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder with a prevalence of around 1%, marked by impaired thought content and form, perception, affect, behavior, and cognitive functioning.

Two main dimensions define the illness: positive symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thought and behavior) and negative symptoms (emotional flattening, alogia, avolition, anhedonia, social withdrawal).

Treatment combines antipsychotic medications (effective on positive symptoms) with psychosocial interventions (rehabilitation, family education, supported employment).

Symptoms

Delusions (paranoid, grandiose, referential)
Hallucinations (especially auditory)
Disorganized thought and speech
Emotional flattening
Social withdrawal and loss of motivation
Cognitive impairment (attention, memory, executive function)

Risk Factors

Family history (strong genetic component)
Perinatal complications
Urban living
Migration
Cannabis use during adolescence
Adverse childhood experiences
