What is Autism Spectrum Disorder: Comprehensive Diagnosis and Multidisciplinary Intervention?

Autism spectrum disorder is neurodevelopmental disorder with deficits in social communication and restricted repetitive behaviors.

DSM-5 unified diagnosis with severity levels 1-3 indicating support needs replaces previous diagnostic categories.

Prevalence approximately 1 in 36 children with significant heterogeneity in presentation, intellectual abilities and support needs.

Male to female ratio approximately 4:1 though females may be underdiagnosed due to camouflaging and atypical presentation.

Genetic factors highly significant with heritability 80% and over 100 implicated genes identifying neurodiverse condition with biological basis.

Symptoms

Persistent deficits in social communication including reciprocal social-emotional interaction, nonverbal communicative behaviors, developing relationships.
Restricted repetitive patterns of behavior including stereotyped movements, insistence on sameness, restricted interests, sensory abnormalities.
Symptoms present from early developmental period though may not become fully manifest until social demands exceed capacities.
Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning.
Disturbances not better explained by intellectual disability or global developmental delay though commonly co-occur.

Risk Factors

Genetic factors with heritability 80% and family recurrence risk significantly elevated supporting strong biological basis.
Advanced parental age including paternal and maternal age modestly increases risk.
Prenatal factors including maternal infection, certain medications, prematurity contribute small increased risk.
Genetic conditions including fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, Rett syndrome, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome have elevated autism prevalence.
No association exists between vaccines and autism with extensive research definitively refuting this disproven hypothesis.

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Concerns about social communication, language delay, repetitive behaviors or sensory issues in young child warrants developmental evaluation.
  • Screening at 18 and 24 months with M-CHAT-R as recommended by American Academy of Pediatrics identifies children needing further evaluation.
  • Confirmed or suspected autism warrants comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation including developmental pediatrics, psychology, speech therapy.
  • Behavioral concerns, mental health issues, transition challenges across age require integrated care planning.
  • Lifespan continuity of care including pediatric to adult transition with attention to medical, mental health, vocational and independent living needs.

Treatment Methods
