What is Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Tau Pathology?

Progressive supranuclear palsy PSP is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by abnormal accumulation of 4R-tau protein in the brain.

Findings include progressive vertical supranuclear gaze palsy, postural instability with backward falls, axial rigidity and frontal cognitive symptoms.

Average disease duration is 6 to 9 years and at present there is no curative treatment.

Symptoms

Frequent backward falls in early disease
Vertical gaze palsy especially of downgaze
Axial rigidity rather than limb rigidity
Frontal cognitive impairment, executive dysfunction
Pseudobulbar affect, dysarthria and dysphagia

Risk Factors

Age 60 to 70 years
Family history of tauopathy
MAPT gene mutations in some cases
Slight male predominance

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Frequent unexplained falls in adults older than 60
  • Difficulty looking down or vertical gaze limitation
  • Atypical parkinsonism not responding to dopamine therapy
  • Personality changes and apathy
