What is Persistent Depressive Disorder (Beyond Dysthymia)?

Persistent depressive disorder (PDD) is a DSM-5 diagnosis that combines dysthymia and chronic depression. Symptoms last at least two years with mild-to-moderate severity.

Patients may feel unhappy, low-energy, or hopeless for years. Although daily function may not be markedly impaired, quality of life and work/relationship performance erode over time.

Diagnosis can be difficult because patients may view symptoms as 'personality traits'. Significant improvement is possible with appropriate psychotherapy and medication.
