What is Pathological Gambling Disorder?

Pathological gambling, formally termed gambling disorder, is a behavioral addiction in which a person repeatedly engages in gambling despite mounting personal, financial, and relational harm. It is the first non-substance behavior recognized as an addiction in modern psychiatric classifications.

The disorder is characterized by preoccupation with gambling, increasing bets to feel excitement, repeated unsuccessful attempts to stop, irritability when reducing play, and chasing losses. Lying to family, borrowing money, and risking employment are common.

Neuroscience research shows shared circuitry with substance addictions including ventral striatum dysregulation, frontal control deficits, and altered dopamine signaling, supporting the use of behavior-focused therapies and selected medications.
