What is Night Eating Syndrome?

Night eating syndrome is an eating disorder characterized by morning anorexia, intensive eating behavior in the evening and at night, and interruption of sleep to eat. It is more common in obese individuals and patients with depression.

Patients are aware of what they eat at night, which distinguishes the syndrome from sleep-related eating disorder. The majority of caloric intake takes place in the evening hours.

Diagnosis is made through detailed eating and sleep history. Treatment uses psychotherapy and, when necessary, medication.
