What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder in which the individual perceives themselves as great and special, constantly expects admiration and privileged treatment, and shows markedly limited empathy.

Exaggerated fantasies of success and power, a tendency to exploit others, jealousy, and extreme vulnerability to criticism are characteristic features. Beneath this structure often lies a fragile self-esteem.

NPD frequently coexists with depression, anxiety, and substance use. Long-term psychotherapy is preferred in treatment; the goal is to increase self-awareness and empathy.

Symptoms

Belief in greatness, superiority, and being special
Constant search for admiration and approval
Difficulty in establishing empathy
Disregard for others' feelings and needs
Expectation of preferential treatment
Jealousy and extreme reaction to criticism (narcissistic injury)

Risk Factors

Exposure to early-period emotional neglect
Genetic predisposition
Parental behavior models
Cultural emphasis on individualism and competition
