What is Methamphetamine Use Disorder?

Methamphetamine is a synthetic stimulant that increases dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin release. Repeated use produces neuroadaptations that drive intense craving, sleep disturbance, and stimulant-induced psychosis with paranoid delusions and hallucinations.

The disorder follows a pattern of escalating use, social and occupational decline, and risky behaviors including unsafe sex and shared injection equipment. Cardiovascular complications such as accelerated coronary disease, cardiomyopathy, and stroke contribute to early mortality.

Treatment relies on contingency management, cognitive behavioral therapy, and community reinforcement. Off-label trials of mirtazapine, bupropion, and naltrexone have shown modest benefit in subgroups. Care must include attention to dental disease, infectious risks, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
