What is Internet Addiction?

Internet addiction is a behavioral addiction pattern characterized by loss of control over excessive or inappropriate internet use, tolerance (needing more time to achieve the same effect), and withdrawal symptoms when use is restricted.

It can include subtypes such as social media addiction, online shopping addiction, and online gambling. Sleep disturbance, social isolation, and decline in school or work performance are common consequences.

Although more frequent in adolescents and young adults, it can affect all age groups. Treating underlying depression, anxiety, or ADHD increases treatment success.
