What is Gaming Disorder?

Gaming disorder is a behavioral addiction included in the WHO ICD-11 classification, characterized by loss of control over participation in digital or video games, gaming taking precedence over other interests in life, and inability to stop despite negative consequences.

Particularly online multiplayer games (MMORPGs) and strategy/war games may pave the way for the development of addiction in at-risk users. Sleep disturbance, social isolation, and academic failure are common consequences.

What distinguishes gaming disorder from ordinary intensive gaming is loss of control, impairment in functioning, and a duration of at least 12 months. Underlying ADHD, depression, or social anxiety should be evaluated.

Risk Factors
